An elementary quantum network of single atoms in optical cavities by S. Ritter et al. in Nature Posted: Jun 25, 2012 |
The authors demonstrate the existence of non-classical correlations between the spin states of two single atoms at a distance of 21 m, maintained for at least 100 ms. |
Acoustic Analogue of Graphene:Observation of Dirac Cones in AZcoustic Surface Waves by D. Torrent et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett. , 2012 Posted: Jun 25, 2012 |
The authors showed theoretically and experimentally that a simple sheet of plastic, structured appropriately, exhibits wave behavior that is an exact analog of electron motion in a sheet of graphene. This opens the door to even more new and interesting ways of manipulating wave propagation in simple systems and offers an experimental analog of an exotic system. |
Transformation-optics description of nonlocal effects in plasmonic nanostructures by A. I. Fernández-Domínguez, A. Wiener, F. J. García-Vidal, S. A. Maier, and J. B. Pendry in Phys. Rev. Lett. Posted: May 7, 2012 |
Fernández-Domínguez et al. study the effect of nonlocality on the properties of metal nanoparticle dimmer using a clever approach based on conformal transformation optics. |
Quantum Plasmonics: Nonlinear Effects in the Field Enhancement of a Plasmonic Nanoparticle Dimer by D.C. Marinica, A.K. Kazansky, P. Nordlander, J. Aizpurua, and A. G. Borisov in Nano Letters Posted: May 5, 2012 |
Marinica et al. present a numerical three dimensional fully quantum mechanical investigation of a metal nanoparticle dimmer. Results indicate that tunnel conduction between the two nanoparticles strongly affect the properties of the dimmer. |
Artificial Faraday rotation using a ring metamaterial structure without static magnetic field by Xianliang Liu, Talmage Tyler, Tatiana Starr, Anthony F. Starr, Nan Marie Jokerst, and Willie J. Padilla in Applied Physics Letters , 2011 Posted: May 3, 2012 |
Liu and colleagues show that metamaterials can change the spectrum of a thermal source, opening up opportunities for energy, lighting and light harvesting applications. |
