The article provides an overview on the current advances in affordable electronically scanned antennas (ESA). The latest innovations in radio frequency (RF) metamaterials which enable the next generation of low size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) software defined apertures (SDA) is discussed. The cognitive signal processing that could take advantage of the available adpative degrees of freedom (DoF), and real-time embedded computing is also discussed.
